FEMFORCE #45

COVER: Roberts; new cover logo

EDITORIAL CONTENT: Article on the Femforce and Dawn Hunter films

MILESTONES: Alizarin Crimson is exposed as Nightveil's impersonator; Garganta recovers intelligence.

1st Story: Untitled (Femforce / Avenger / Miss Masque story)(22 pgs)

Credits:
Bill Black, story; Dick Ayers, pencils; Mark Heike, inks

Synopsis:
One evening, the Avenger visits his sister Laura, hoping that her mystic abilities can help him locate Claire Farrow, his assistant and love interest from his pre-Vault days. Laura persuades Roger to forget his troubles for the evening and to accompany her to a dance at her hotel. Roger's awkwardness at the festivities is relieved somewhat when he encounters Diana Adams, who reveals her identity as Miss Masque and her knowledge of his own. After the party, Nightveil creates a Diana doppelganger to try to seduce Roger and remove the tunic he must constantly wear to protect him from his cancer. Fortunately, the real Diana's suspicions are aroused by Laura's strange behavior at the dance, and she investigates as Miss Masque, arriving in time to save Roger and help him battle her impersonator. Nightveil enters the fray and is about to destroy Roger and Diana when the room is suddenly rocked by the appearance of Azagoth. Laura's mentor strips away Nightveil's disguise, exposing her as the evil sorceress Alizarin Crimson, who reveals how she changed places with Nightveil during their Halloween battle. Azagoth fades away, leaving Crimson a few brief seconds to think she is free before she is snared by the Haunted Horseman and spirited away to her punishment among the dead souls of the Limbo Void. Although the mystery of Nightveil's strange behavior is revealed, the question still remains as to the real Nightveil's whereabouts. Meanwhile, Lady Luger continues tormenting Joan, and Colt calls Jen Burke at home with news about Lady Luger's identity and possible location.

Notes:
The budding relationship between the Avenger and Miss Masque has its beginnings in this story; Roger's complicated feelings for Claire are resolved tragically by her murder in the Avenger ashcan comic.... Crimson, as Nightveil, probes Roger's mind to understand his need to continue wearing his uniform shirt.... Jen slips out to meet Colt after her phone call, unaware that David is awake and struggling with his suspicions and fears.... Miss Masque's comments in panel 2, page 2 of the second story indicate that this story takes place several days after the Gammazon invasion.... Lady Luger humiliates Joan by putting her in her old Ms. Victory costume.

2nd Story: A Too Tall Tale (9 pgs)

Credits:
Bill Black, story; Dick Ayers, pencils, Mark Heike, inks

Synopsis:
While Garganta, apparently shorn of her intelligence, lingers outside Femforce HQ, Miss Masque and the Avenger tell the Femforce about the previous night's encounter with Alizarin Crimson. As the team uses this new information to make sense of recent events, Gordon and Kelly burst in. Gordon is furious that Garganta is still alive, but his temper is kept in check by Kelly, who tactfully reminds him of the presence of "civilians" Miss Masque and the Avenger. Gordon puts on a good-guy act and departs, leaving Kelly to supervise clothing and shelter for the giantess. These are provided by Reddevil, who contributes a Span-XX outfit, and by Rocketman, who airlifts in a new apartment. Stardust examines Garganta and determines that her brain waves are still those of a passive sea mammal. Miss Masque, having learned more about Garganta's story, is determined to expose Gordon's experiments until Garganta suddenly revives. In gentle, loving tones, she reassures the heroes and heroines gathered around her that what happened to her was for the best, and that she now wants to share her inner peace with the world.

Magic & Technology

Garganta's Span-XX outfit; Rocketman's apartment for Garganta

Notes:
Part of Gordon's fear of crossing swords with the Avenger is his fear of his sister Nightveil's vengeful power.... She-Cat thinks Alizarin's impersonation of Nightveil accounts for the sorceress's desertion of her until Stardust points out that Cat's bonding attempt with Nightveil took place before the Halloween battle.... Stardust astutely observes that Gordon probably will regret saying as much as he did in front of Diana and Roger.... Miss Masque observes that Gordon has no authority over her when she threatens to blow the whistle on him.... Curiously, considering how angry the team was with Jennifer when they thought she had destroyed Garganta, no one says anything in her defense when Gordon threatens to discipline her for insubordination. Garganta's current incarnation as a pacifistic "love goddess" ends abruptly with her fierce battle with the Claw in GGAQ 9 (1).... Costumes: 1st appearance of Garganta's Span-XX "G" bikini provided by Bart Hill.
