FEMFORCE #42

COVER: Nemmers / Heike

EDITORIAL CONTENT: Purple Claw pull-out mini-comic

MILESTONES: None

1st Story: Trading Places, or Which Witch is Which? (21 pgs)

Credits:
Bill Black, story; Scott Nemmers, pencils; John Nadeau / David Momry / Mark Heike, inks; Tim Twonky, letters

Synopsis:
On Halloween, Nightveil returns to an empty FF HQ after her other dimensional experiences. Alone, she tries to shower away the gloom she still feels over deserting She-Cat when Cat herself calls to invite her to join the group at Church Street Station. As Nightveil teleports downtown, her expectations of a pleasant evening are shattered by the menace of Alizarin Crimson and her mindless minions. Nightveil drives off the attackers and joins She-Cat and Stardust, relieved that her fighting is over for the night. Crimson, however, is merely opening the battle on another front, as she turns innocent Trick-or-Treaters into demons who spread terror and death around Orlando. Nightveil, She-Cat and Stardust spring to the attack and are soon joined by Ms. Victory and Synn, who have playfully swapped costumes for the evening, and by Jet-Girl and Rocketman. During the battle, Nightveil and Crimson collide, apparently knocking out the latter and giving the heroine a chance to consign the evil witch to limbo. With the battle over and the demons turned back into children, the Femforce hold Nightveil to her promise to provide Halloween entertainment by telling them spooky stories in a nearby graveyard.

Magic & Technology

Wet T-shirt award trophy won by Stardust

Notes:
Cat is noticeably more good-natured since her bonding, as shown by her thoughtfulness in calling Laura out to party.... Crimson asks Nightveil where she has been this past week, indicating that relatively little time has passed since the Shroud Wars.... Crimson tells Nightveil that her powers to control the elements allowed her to escape from Jungle Island.... Kelly appears only on the viewscreen alerting Synn and Jennifer to the trouble downtown.... Synn and Jen are very friendly with each other, affording Jen a rare night of enjoyment with her teammates, even considering the battle they fight.... Crimson's collision with Nightveil gives her the chance to quickly, secretly exchange bodies with her and send Laura to the limbo void instead. Over the next few issues, the Femforce are dismayed by "Nightveil's" strange behavior.

2nd Story: The Serpent Strikes (8 pgs)

Notes:
Dr. Weir Purple Claw reprint not detailed in this index.

3rd Story: Shark Bait (6 pgs)

Credits:
The Count, story / layouts; John Nadeau, pencils / inks; Tim Twonky, letters; Bill Black, edits

Synopsis:
With her fuel exhausted, Janis Lawson drifts helplessly in her small boat after fleeing Jungle Island. Suddenly she is attacked by a hungry shark that leaves her boat a splintered wreck. With only one chance to save herself from the oncoming killer, Janis clubs it on the snout with her first aid kit. The Shark departs, leaving Janis clinging to life on the remains of her boat, fearful of the shark's return and praying for a miracle. Her apparent salvation appears in the form of a ship approaching on the horizon.

Time

Several-minute period soon after villains' escape from Jungle Island following the Shroud war

Magic & Technology

Janis's boat and first-aid kit she uses on the shark

Notes:
Janis could not survive alone for long in her small craft; the fact that she left Jungle Island just prior to the final battle with the Shroud and she is found in FF 43 by refugees of that war demonstrate that the epic events of FF 34-36 actually happened over a very compressed period of time.... Although no villains are listed as appearing, they are technically present in cameo in the last panel of the story, as we learn in the next issue that the ship approaching Janis is occupied by Iron Jaw, the Frightenstein Monster, Killer Clown, and Singapore Sal.
